Ohio Group

A group of approximately 15 people in the Toledo, Ohio area have been training with Debbie for the last several years. Debbie conducts 4-day workshops in Ohio every other month. Some of us travel to Honeoye Falls, New York to train with Debbie during the month that she remains in New York. Debbie has helped rehabilitate dogs whose attitudes and performance has suffered from the wrong mix of improperly administered compulsion and lack of motivation. She has also helped start us out the "right way" with new puppies. Debbie is extremely skillful in working with many different breeds as well as with the different abilities associated with individual trainers. She deals very well with a great variety of temperaments in the dogs she teaches and has a tremendous knack for problem solving. She is able to individualize problem solving to each handler and has an amazing ability to "read dogs" and know how a desired response can be achieved. It's always inspiring to watch Debbie work with her own dogs and witness the transformation that occurs.

Teaching the person is tantamount to teaching the dog and Debbie has a wonderful ability to get a particular idea through to the handler. She utilizes her excellent communication and people skills in all her training endeavors and she can demonstrate easily with most dogs. Debbie has an easy going yet determined personality that makes her a pleasure to work with.

Debbie has excelled as an exhibitor as well as a trainer and has helped deal with a myriad of training issues in both Schutzhund as well as AKC competition obedience. Debbie's students have achieved multiple high in trials, multiple first placements as well as other placements in numerous obedience classes. Her students in Agility trials have successfully used her methods.

We sincerely thank her for all of her help.

New York Group

Debbie Zappia has been our trainer for the past 4 years. She possesses that rare combination of both trainer and teacher. She has demonstrated through her own successes the importance of attitude, both with her dogs and herself. More importantly, as a teacher, she is able to convey to her students the methods to employ to get the best attitude and accuracy from our dogs. She is able to understand the character and temperament of each dog and select the right technique and balance of correction and motivation to accomplish the goal of dogs that work with high levels of attitude and accuracy. This is demonstrated time and again with the level of success her students have had on the local, regional and national level. Our success speaks for itself and for the talent and dedication of our trainer and teacher, Debbie.

"More than two years after starting our first obedience class, we earned our CD in Novice A. Shortly after that my training friends arranged surreptitiously for Debra Zappia to observe Emmy and me working together. It was really an audition. We passed muster and Deb agreed to take us on as students. Debra Zappia is a former assistant to Gottflied Dildei and currently a successful Schutzhund competitor both nationally and internationally. For the next two years under Deb's tutelage, we retrained heeling and laid a strong foundation for Open and Utility. For those two years we did not enter the ring except to do matches."

"I've been extremely fortunate to be a student of Debra Zappia. Deb has an uncanny ability to read dogs and trainers, pinpoint problems and solve them in innovative ways."

Article in Front and Finish Volume XXXII, Number 12, September 2003 Written By: Sue Pettit

Sue began researching the breed she loves, and was not seeing any happy animated shepherds in the obedience ring. She wasn't satisfied with this picture, and her own dogs had never worked with much attitude. She wanted something more. This search finally led her in 1989 to a breeder living in Macedon, NY at the time by the name of Debbie Zappia. Sue's life with her German Shepherd has never been the same since purchasing a pup from Debbie; a pup with all the attitude and drive anyone could ever want in a dog. Her new dog was out of two German import parents, both of whom had Schutzhund III titles. The difference in temperaments and working drives was so very evident in this female pup, and Sue began taking lessons from Debbie. This was the beginning of a long friendship and the road that led to an American and Canadian UD on that first import-line pup (her wonderful Kiri) and subsequently to Uno, who Debbie also bred.

Deb had a tremendous influence on Sue's training methods, and eventually on the training of several of her AKC friends. Deb developed quite a following, and her insight into dog behavior and temperament is unsurpassed. Her knowledge of the German Shepherd and her constant efforts to breed good sound dogs with a wonderful work ethic are to be applauded. Even though her first priority is to produce good working shepherds for Schutzhund, AKC people are also benefiting from her efforts, as both venues demand some of the same working qualities. Debbie is a resource to be treasured and appreciated for who she is. She herself has achieved the highest levels of Schutzhund competition and she is on the World team this year for the third time, each time with a different dog.
